Workforce Development and Technical Education


WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Delgado’s Workforce Development and Technical Education seeks to enhance the quality of life for all by providing educational programs and services that promote personal, professional, and economic development in the Greater New Orleans area.

Through targeted outreach and by utilizing a variety of traditional and non-traditional delivery systems, Workforce Development and Technical Education provides flexible educational services, including continuing education, professional development, and customized training for business, industry, and governmental agencies. Workforce Development and Technical Education provides programs and services such as

Courses and training are offered at the City Park and West Bank Campuses, the Maritime, Fire, Radar, and Industrial Training facilities in New Orleans East, the East Jefferson and West Jefferson sites, on the northshore at the Slidell sites, and the Jefferson Business and Career Solutions Center in Gretna. BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY TRAINING

The Workforce Development and Technical Education unit is designed to provide customer-driven assessment and training programs as an inducement to secure new value-added businesses to our region, to respond to permanent closures and layoffs, as well as to provide existing businesses with the necessary training for expansion. This unit serves as a forecasting mechanism for industry growth by providing leadership to the business community in identifying and training for emerging workforce trends and technologies. Through these comprehensive initiatives, the Workforce Development and Technical Education approach will allow employers to retrain, upgrade and attract a skilled workforce pool to our region. The unit offers flexible scheduling for programs that are portable, modular, accessible, and affordable with the ability to be delivered through a variety of methods both on site and on campus.

MARINE FIREFIGHTING AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COURSES

Delgado Community College offers U.S. Coast Guard-approved basic and advanced courses that provide maritime employees with specialized training in marine fire fighting, industrial safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, and more. These courses are designed to meet the specific requirements of inland waterway, offshore vessel, and offshore platform personnel.

Successful completion of any U.S. Coast Guard-approved training is accepted by the Coast Guard in lieu of examination. Industrial Fire Brigade training is now offered at this facility. Fire scenarios have been designed by industry partners to simulate real-life, in-plant situations, and provide training for Incident Commanders.

In addition to fire fighting, courses such as U.S. Coast Guard-approved STCW Basic Safety, Medical Care Provider, Vessel Security Officer, and a variety of OSHA/Industrial Safety courses are also taught on a regular basis. MARINE RADAR SCHOOL

The Delgado Community College Marine Radar Program has relocated to 13200 Old Gentilly Road in New Orleans, La., and is now housed together with the fire training program. This is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved facility featuring a 240 degree Full Mission Bridge Simulator, along with a 180 degree simulator. Delgado’s Full Mission Bridge Simulators are equipped with the most modern equipment available in the world today. These simulators were designed to train maritime personnel in the region but also have the ability to train personnel on vessels in waterways around the world.

Delgado Radar School also has facilities with labs to instruct students in Coast Guard-approved ARPA, Comprehensive Radar, GMDSS, and Apprentice Mate/Steersman, offering professional certifications in many areas. GOLDMAN SACHS 10,000 Small Businesses

Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses helps small businesses create jobs and economic opportunity by providing entrepreneurs with greater access to business education, financial capital, and business support services. Participants will gain practical business knowledge and skills that can be put to work immediately, such as contract negotiation, marketing, accounting and people management.

Participants attend a highly practical 11-session business management education program that meets at Delgado Community College. Participants also commit six to eight hours per week for out-of-class activities geared towards their business. The benefits of the program include:

• Target Applicant: The program at Delgado Community College is designed for owners of small businesses who

  • Generate revenues between $150,000 and $4 million (in the last fiscal year)
  • Have been in business for at least 2 years
  • Employ at least four people, including themselves (full- or part-time)
  • Operate a scalable business with potential for growth

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Continuing Education department was established in 1979 to make education more accessible to the public and to meet community needs that are not served by traditional college programs. Although the department has been known by other names (e.g., Community Campus), the purpose has remained the same: to offer lifelong learning opportunities for students seeking professional development or personal enrichment. The course catalog changes continuously to reflect the ever-evolving needs of the individuals and businesses throughout the region, and classes are designed with varying educational backgrounds and goals in mind. Continuing Education classes begin on a staggered schedule throughout each semester and can be customized in response to student and industry demand. Approximately 150 non-credit courses are offered.

COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Community and Economic Development (C&ED) division is the intersection of economic growth, workforce, and community investments. Our approach is through the engagement of business and industry, government, philanthropic entities, non-profits, and other community stakeholders by leveraging Delgado’s institutional commitment to providing education and training opportunities - meeting the unique needs of industry. C&ED programs also extend to youth through mentorship, training, career explorations, and summer employment initiatives.

BUSINESS, INDUSTRY, AND CORPORATE CUSTOMIZED TRAINING

C&ED’s customized training provides the opportunity for organizations to receive specialized training solutions to fulfill their specific development needs. We assess the learning needs of your employees and collaborate to prepare a prescribed instructional design and delivery strategy.  Our goal is customized content that will leave your employees empowered with enhanced skillsets and thereby increase productivity and drive revenue growth.  Services available include the following:

INCUMBENT WORKER TRAINING PROGRAM

The Incumbent Worker Training Program provides grant funding for customized training to benefit business and industry by assisting in the skill development of existing employees. Through this client-driven training, organizations are able to effectively upgrade and retain their current workforce and create new opportunities, thereby enhancing economic development. Workforce Development and Technical Education’s collaborative efforts in Incumbent Worker Training provide a viable relationship among business, government, and Delgado to ensure a properly trained workforce and the opportunity for career advancement. HIGH-DEMAND OCCUPATIONAL TRAINING INITIATIVES

Community and Economic Development offers industry certified, accelerated, and accessible high-demand occupational training programs in Electrical, Carpentry, Welding, Solar Paneling, HVAC, and ICD-10 – leading job seekers to sustainable careers. For more information, call (504) 671-6465.

COMMUNITY-BASED WORKFORCE TRAINING INITIATIVES

In response to the need for workforce training in the Greater New Orleans Area, the W.I.A., Y.O.S.T., and Intensive Services programs promote economic independence, self-respect, and confidence. WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (W.I.A.)

The W.I.A. program promotes employment and training designed to provide services that will increase skills for adults and youth that will result in employment and increased earnings. YOUTH OCCUPATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING (Y.O.S.T.)

The Y.O.S.T. program provides free training for eligible youth (ages 17-21) in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Billing and Coding (ICD-10), and Communications Technology (C-TECH). For more information, call (504) 361-6542.

STRATEGIES TO EMPOWER PEOPLE (S.T.E.P.)

The S.T.E.P. program offers academic and short-term vocational skills for participants referred by the Office of Family Support. Course work must be completed within one year. For more information on these programs, call the STEP Coordinator at (504) 671- 6749.

INTENSIVE SERVICES

The Intensive Services program provides a learning-centered environment to prepare students to attain educational, career, and personal goals. These services are provided through academics and skills assessments, classes, and workshops based on the needs of each participant. Classes and workshops are offered to assist students in résumé writing, business etiquette, business office support, customer service, and computer training.
