Testing Information

The Delgado placement test and ESL exams are $15 each. To attend a testing session, students must 

• Submit a Delgado admission application - go to www.dcc.edu and click on the “Apply Now” box.
• Complete the free Delgado online orientation - go to www.dcc.edu, click “Future Students,” then click “Orientation” on the left side of the webpage. Examinees must provide their online orientation certificate of completion when they report for their placement test; first-time freshmen may then schedule their placement test.  

Placement Tests

Delgado provides two types of tests to determine a new student’s placement for college courses. The tests are

• Placement Tests in English, math, and reading
• English Language Proficiency Test

All degree-seeking college students (new, transfer, and re-admit students) who have not successfully completed college-level English and math courses or successfully completed developmental English or math courses with a grade of “C” or better within the last three years are required to take the Delgado placement tests. Most tests are computerized, and study guides are available at the Advising and Testing Office or at www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html, www.testpreview.com, or www.khanacademy.org for math.

If you have a copy of your ACT score, bring it to the placement test. Each placement testing session lasts approximately two and a half hours. ACT and placement scores are valid for three years. Use this ACT test score table below to determine which placement test, if any, you will be required to take.

 *You may qualify for advanced placement. First-time freshmen who submit ACT scores of an acceptable level for advanced placement must fill out the appropriate form in the Advising and Testing Office during their first 30 credit hours to receive the advanced placement credit. An English score of 25 or higher and/or a composite score of 22 or higher qualifies a student for consideration for honors courses. Placement tests are designed to determine levels of proficiency in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics. Students who demonstrate a need for basic skills development will be advised into the appropriate developmental studies course(s) via their placement test results. This service is designed to make sure you are placed in classes where you can be successful.

Items to Bring to the Test

1. Certificate of completion of the online orientation
2. Current government issued photo ID
3. Test admit slip
4. Calculator
5. Two #2 pencils

Please arrive 30 minutes before test time to check in. First-time freshmen should prepare to stay four to five hours if they choose to complete testing, advising, and registration on the same day. 

ESL English Proficiency Exam

All limited English proficiency students (students whose native language is a language other English or who come from an environment where a language other than English is dominant) must take the ESL exam. The results are valid for one year only. The ESL test consists of four Internet based tests and a handwritten composition that is in English only. The ESL test will determine the student’s level of English proficiency in four areas: reading, composition, grammar, and listening. Scores on this test will help advisors in the ESL department determine students’ placement in ESL, if necessary. Students who demonstrate English proficiency may place into English 101. Study guides are available in Delgado’s testing centers.

ESL examinees must

1. Schedule a test online.
2. Bring a photo ID to the test.
3. Bring two #2 pencils to the test.

ESL students do not attend first-time freshman advising and registration sessions. First-time ESL students will meet with their advisors to receive their test scores and register by appointment. 

Important Testing Guidelines

No cell phones, food, drinks, or other electronic devices are allowed in the testing rooms.

How to Use Appointment Plus to Complete Your Online Orientation and Schedule a Placement Test Online

1. Go to www.dcc.edu.
2. Click Future Student.
3. Look on left side; click First-Time Freshmen.
4. Click Orientation.
5. Complete the 45-minute orientation.
6. Copy your Orientation Confirmation.
7. Click the small box that says Schedule Your Appointment Now.
8. Enter your Delgado email address or register to log in.
9. Select your campus, test (placement), and test date.
10. Fill in your personal information: name, phone number, college-wide ID, email address.
11. Select Finalize Appointment.
12. You will receive an email confirmation to bring to the test with your ID and calculator.
    

First Time Freshman Advising and Registration Sessions

The Office of Advising and Testing at Delgado Community College offers first-time freshman advising and registration sessions to assist new students with class selection and navigating the LoLA registration system. Sessions are offered at various times and days of the week throughout the registration period at all Delgado locations. Students should be prepared to spend approximately four to five hours on campus if they choose to complete testing, advising, and registration on the same day. To attend a first-time freshman advising and registration session a student must

1.        Be a new student (have never attended any college previously).

2.        Complete a Delgado admission application.

3.        Complete Delgado’s online orientation.

4.        Complete the Delgado placement test or have sufficient ACT scores for class placement (see above).

5.        Sign up for a session with the testing office at your Delgado location (see above).
