WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION
Delgado’s Workforce Development and Education seeks to enhance the quality of life for all by providing educational programs and services that promote personal, professional, and economic development in the Greater New Orleans area.
Through targeted outreach and utilizing a variety of traditional and non-traditional delivery systems, Workforce Development and Education provides flexible educational services, including continuing education, professional development, and customized training for business, industry, and governmental agencies.

Courses and training are offered at the City Park and West Bank Campuses, the Maritime, Fire, Radar and Industrial Training facilities in New Orleans East, the East Jefferson and West Jefferson sites, on the northshore at the Covington and Slidell sites, and the Jefferson Business and Career Solutions Center in Gretna. BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY TRAINING
The Workforce Development and Education unit is designed to provide customer-driven assessment and training programs as an inducement to secure new value-added businesses to our region, to respond to permanent closures and layoffs, as well as to provide existing businesses with the necessary training for expansion. This unit serves as a forecasting mechanism for industry growth by providing leadership to the business community in identifying and training for emerging workforce trends and technologies. Through these comprehensive initiatives, the Workforce Development and Education approach will allow employers to retrain, upgrade and attract a skilled workforce pool to our region. The unit offers flexible scheduling for programs that are portable, modular, accessible and affordable with the ability to be delivered through a variety of methods both on site and on campus.
MARINE FIREFIGHTING AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS COURSES
Delgado Community College offers U.S. Coast Guard-approved basic and advanced courses that provide maritime employees with specialized training in marine fire fighting, industrial safety, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness, and more. These courses are designed to meet the specific requirements of inland waterway, offshore vessels, and offshore platform personnel.
Completion of the 51-hour combined basic and advanced courses is accepted by the Coast Guard in lieu of examination. Industrial Fire Brigade training is also available. Fire scenarios designed by industry simulate in-plant situations and provide training in Incident Command.
In addition to fire fighting, courses such as U.S. Coast Guard-approved STCW Basic Safety, crane operator and rigger, and a variety of OSHA/Industrial Safety courses are also taught on a regular basis. MARINE RADAR SCHOOL
The Delgado Community College Marine Radar School has relocated to 13200 Old Gentilly Road in New Orleans, La., and is now housed together with the fire training. This is a U.S. Coast Guard-approved facility featuring a 240 degree Full Mission Bridge Simulator, along with a 180 degree simulator. Delgado’s Full Mission Bridge Simulators are equipped with the most modern equipment available in the world today. These simulators were designed to train maritime personnel in the region, but also have the ability to train personnel on vessels in waterways around the world.
Delgado Radar School also has facilities with labs to instruct students in Coast Guard-approved ARPA, Radar, GMDSS, and Celestial Navigation, offering professional certifications in many areas. DIGITAL MEDIA EDUCATION CENTER
Overview
Delgado Community College, in collaboration with Louisiana FastStart, is proud to announce the creation of a customized Digital Media Education Center to serve the rapidly growing Digital Media industry within the Greater New Orleans Region. The Center, which features a state-of-the art computer lab on Delgado’s City Park Campus, will prepare students to obtain jobs in video game design, as well as other fields that utilize high-end graphics software for 3D modeling, animation, and rendering.
The Digital Media Education Center offers a career-based education in order to meet industry needs, increase the skilled workforce pool, and foster economic development within the region. The Center also adheres to the Workforce Development and Education mission of promoting individual development and enhancing quality of life within our community by offering personal enrichment courses.
Facility
The Digital Media Education Center provides the experience of working in an industry-standard environment, including a local fiber server and 15 Mac Pro student workstations utilizing both Mac OS X Lion and Windows 7 operating systems. The Mac Pro workstations are equipped with 2.66GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processors, NVIDIA Quadro 4000 graphics cards, Wacom Intuous4 pen tablets, and 27-inch LED Cinema Display monitors.
Software for this training program includes Autodesk Maya, Autodesk 3ds Max, NukeX, Adobe AfterEffects, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver), and more. For more information, call (504) 671-6492 or email rmathe@dcc.edu.
GOLDMAN SACHS 10,000 Small Businesses
Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses helps small businesses create jobs and economic opportunity by providing entrepreneurs with greater access to business education, financial capital and business support services. Participants will gain practical business knowledge and skills that can be put to work immediately, such as contract negotiation, marketing, accounting and people management.
Participants attend a highly practical 11-session business management education program that meets from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Fridays and some Saturdays at Delgado Community College. Participants also commit six to eight hours per week for out-of-class activities geared towards their business. The benefits of the program include:
• Practical Business Education: Learn practical and immediately applicable skills to grow your business
• Business Support Services: Receive one-on-one business advising to help develop a strategic and tailored plan for growth
• Potential Capital to Expand: Opportunity and tools to position your business to access capital

Target Applicant: Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses is designed for business owners with limited resources who have a business poised for growth. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to growing their business and creating jobs within their community.
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
• Applicant must be an owner or co-owner of a business
• Operation for at least two years
• Revenues between $150,000 and $4.0 million in the most recent fiscal year
• Minimum of four employees

CONTINUING EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Continuing Education’s mission is to make education more accessible to the public and to meet community needs not served by traditional college programs. The Continuing Education department offers non-credit courses for individuals who want to enrich their cultural experiences or improve their professional or occupational skills.
Non-credit students are awarded Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for each course successfully completed. The Continuing Education Unit is a nationally accepted unit of measurement. The earned CEUs become part of the student’s permanent records and are often used by employers as a means of evaluating professional development.

INCUMBENT WORKER TRAINING PROGRAM
The Incumbent Worker Training program provides grant funding for customized training to benefit business and industry by assisting in the skill development of existing employees. Through this customer driven training, companies are able to effectively upgrade and retain their current workforce, thus enhancing economic development.

COMMUNITY-BASED WORKFORCE TRAINING INITIATIVES
In response to the need for workforce training in the Greater New Orleans Area, the W.I.A., Y.O.S.T., S.T.E.P., and Intensive Services programs promote economic independence, self-respect, and confidence. These programs provide training in an environment that is student-oriented and instruction that utilizes innovative technology.
WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (W.I.A.)
The W.I.A. program promotes employment and training designed to provide services that will increase skills for adults and youth that will result in employment and increased earnings. Workforce Development and Education offers several education programs that can help in overcoming employment barriers.
YOUTH OCCUPATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING (Y.O.S.T.)
The Y.O.S.T. program provides free training for eligible youth (ages 17-21) in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Billing and Coding (ICD-10), and Communications Technology (C-TECH). For more information, call (504) 361-6542.
STRATEGIES TO EMPOWER PEOPLE (S.T.E.P.)
The S.T.E.P. program offers academic and short-term vocational skills for participants referred by the Office of Family Support. Course work must be completed within one year. For more information on these programs, call the STEP Coordinator at (504) 671- 6749.
INTENSIVE SERVICES
The Intensive Services program provides a learning-centered environment to prepare students to attain educational, career, and personal goals. These services are provided through academics and skills assessments. classes and workshops based on the needs of each participant.
