CAREER AND TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
DIVISION: NURSING

The Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate program trains students to meet the personal care needs of patients/residents in hospitals and long term care facilities.  Fundamental concepts taught include interpersonal communication, infection control, environmental and safety measures, emergency response, body mechanics, and basic mental health concepts.  Demonstration of correct performance of basic nursig skills is required by state and federal standards and is approved by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals.  Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible for certification as a nursing assistant in the state of Louisiana. 

The Certificate in Certified Nursing Assisant is a limited admissions program.  In addition to applying to the college, prospective students must complete an application to the program in the Division of Nursing’s admissions office. 

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant Career and Technical Certificate program, the learner will be able to:

  • Assess biological, psychosocial, sociocultural, spiritual needs, and/or developmental factors that influence health attainment (SLO #1)
  • Plan and incorporate therapeutic interventions and collaborates as a member of the health care team (SLO #2)
  • Explain rehabilitative/restorative care concepts, concepts of death with dignity, and the nursing process in the care of clients (SLO #3)
  • Apply concepts of infection control, safety, and emergency procedures in the care of clients (SLO #4)
  • Utilize appropriate communication and interpersonal skills in the care of clients (SLO #5)
  • Perform a basic patient care skills, including personal care, vital signs, assistance with meals, restorative care and assistance with other activities of daily living (SLO #6)
  • Demonstrate respect for client rights and confidentiality (SLO #7)
  • Document care delivery appropriately (SLO #8)
  • Perform all skills required by the Louisiana Department of Health for Nurse Aide Training (SLO #9)

REQUIRED COURSES IN MAJOR


Required grade of “C” or higher.
