Health Information Technology, A.A.S.


DEGREE: ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE
DIVISION: ALLIED HEALTH

The Health Information Technology Program (formerly Medical Records Technology) is a two-year associate degree program which provides academic and clinical education in the field of Health Information services. The Health Information Technology Associate of Applied Science degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) Accreditation Services, 233 N. Michigan Ave, 21st Floor, Chicago, IL 60601-5800, phone: 312-233-1100. After successful completion of the program, graduates are eligible to sit for the national certification examination given by AHIMA.

The program has limited enrollment. Once accepted, the program requires two years to complete. Prospective students must contact the Allied Health Admissions Office to initiate the admissions procedure. The deadline for application to the program is March 15. To qualify for admission into the program, the student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Score on the ACT, SAT or Delgado College Placement Test sufficient to place the student in college-level courses. (ENGL 101  or ENGL 110 , MATH 120  and no remedial reading.)
  3. If previous college courses have been taken, the student’s cumulative grade point average must be at least 2.0.
  4. Be able to meet the program’s technical standards.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the Health Information Technology Associate of Applied Science program, the learner will be able to:

  • Evaluate health information data content and structure according to established guidelines and standards as these relate to paper and electronic health data in traditional and alternative health care settings (SLO # 1)
  • Comply with legal, ethical, accreditation, and certification standards as these relate to access, disclosure, retention, privacy, and security of health information (SLO # 2)
  • Govern health information technologies through health informatics, analytics, and data use (SLO # 3)
  • Evaluate revenue cycle processes and compliance with regulatory requirements and reimbursement methodologies (SLO # 4)
  • Evaluate the accuracy of diagnostic and procedural medical coding assignments and groupings (SLO # 5)
  • Manage human, financial, and physical resources using leadership and management skills (SLO # 6)
  • Collaborate in a group to resolve health information challenges in a changing healthcare environment (SLO # 7)
  • Utilize computer hardware and software applications such as the internet, Microsoft Office, learning management systems, and health information technology systems (SLO # 8)
