CERTIFICATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE PROGRAM
SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES - SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH
The Medical Coding Certificate of Applied Science program at Delgado Community College provides academic and clinical education in inpatient and outpatient coding, including required courses in health record content, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and disease process. The program prepares graduates to perform medical coding functions in various health care facilities.
The program will adhere to the American Health Information Management Association’s (AHIMA) approval criteria for coding certificate programs. Students completing this certificate will be qualified to sit for the Certified Coding Associate (CCA) credential.
The Certificate of Applied Science program is a limited admissions program. Students interested in Delgado’s Medical Coding Certificate of Applied Science program should contact the School of Allied Health Admissions Office at (504) 671-6201 for admissions information.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the Medical Coding Certificate of Applied Science program, the learner will be able to:
- Evaluate the accuracy of diagnostic and procedural medical coding assignments and groupings (SLO # 1)
- Evaluate revenue cycle processes and compliance with regulatory requirements and reimbursement methodologies (SLO # 2)
- Develop appropriate physician queries to resolve data and coding discrepancies (SLO # 3)
- Comply with legal, ethical, accreditation, and certification standards as these relate to the access, disclosure, privacy, and security of health information (SLO # 4)
- Analyze the documentation in the health record to ensure it supports the diagnosis and reflects the patient’s progress, clinical findings, and discharge status (SLO # 5)
- Collaborate to resolve health information challenges in a changing healthcare environment (SLO # 6)
- Utilize computer hardware and software applications such as the internet, Microsoft Office, learning management systems, and health information technology systems (SLO # 6)
