DEGREE: ASSOCIATE OF ARTS
SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS, SOCIAL SCIENCES, AND EDUCATION
The Associate of Arts degree in American Sign Language Interpreting prepares individuals to work in a variety of entry-level settings with a diverse population. Competencies in English and American Sign Language (ASL) are necessary. Students will have both in-class and out-of-class experiences with members of the Deaf and interpreting communities. Articulation Agreements with senior colleges allow students to be continue their education in related baccalaureate degree programs. Graduates are prepared to begin the national certification progress. Those interested should contact the national certifying organization for more information and requirements.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the American Sign Language Interpreting Associate of Arts program, the learner will be able to:
- Describe, explain, and discuss Deaf Culture, including the values and influence of diverse cultural, historical, and global perspectives of, and in, the Deaf community (SLO # 1)
- Evaluate culturally based linguistic and nonlinguistic information to create dynamic equivalent translations in American Sign Language and written and spoken English discourse (SLO # 2)
- Apply entry-level competencies as defined by best practices in the field of sign language interpreting by producing accurate, meaningful, and effective interpretations (SLO # 3)
- Apply the principles of the interpreting profession’s code of professional conduct in ethical decision-making (SLO # 4)

Required grade of “C” or higher.
