Emergency Medical Technician- Advanced C.T.C.


CAREER AND TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE 
SCHOOL  OF HEALTH SCIENCES- SCHOOL OF ALLIED HEALTH 
 
The Career and Technical Certificate will prepare the student to function as an advanced life support provider, providing care above the training level of the Emergency Medical Technician- Basic, but below that of the paramedic.  It will prepare the student to be an entry-level AEMT, able to function independently at the AEMT level, providing assessment, recognition, and treatment of various medical and trauma-related problems. The successful completion of the course prepares the student to take the EMS national registry written examination. 
 
The Career and Technical Certificate in Advanced Emergency Medical Technician accepts one class per year in the spring. Selection of the year’s class will be competitive and will have limited enrollment that is governed by the number of clinical positions available in the affiliate institutions. Those accepted into the program must make a full-time commitment for the consecutive months required for completion and must be a Louisiana State licensed, nationally registered emergency medical technician prior to admission into the program.  Prospective students must contact the program director of EMS Education in the School of Allied Health to initiate the admissions procedure. The deadline for application to the program is October 30th. To qualify for admission to the program, the student must meet the following criteria:
 

Student Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the Certificate of Technical Studies in Emergency Medical Technician- Advanced. the learner will be able to:

  • Evaluate patients for various types of hypoperfusion (shock), using gained knowledge to determine the appropriate type and treatment (SLO #1)
  • Perform vascular access for a variety of patients using proper technique as noted on the appropriate skills sheet (SLO #2)
  • Manage as team leader the appropriate assessment and treatment of a cardiac arrest victim, according to national protocols (SLO #3)
  • Evaluate patients for various drug and poisoning emergencies and develop the appropriate treatment plan according to national protocols (SLO #4)
  • Combining knowledge and skills competency, evaluate patients for various types of respiratory conditions and develop an appropriate treatment plan according to national standards (SLO #5)
